Bohemian style interior design

If you had a chance to read our recent interior design trends of 2020 blog you will know that abstract colour schemes are set to be very trendy this year. We have also seen a shift towards bohemian style becoming more popular. How on earth do you make your home bohemian-inspired though? Read on to find out more.

What do we mean by bohemian interior design?

Let’s start with the basics. The most important thing to understand about bohemian interior design is that it is an ‘unruly’ style where pretty much anything goes. Get rid of the rules surrounding which colours and styles go together, and try combining random, colourful items and you will be well on your way to creating a bohemian feel.

There is still a bit of an art to creating a seamless bohemian style though. It is all about utilising layered textures, vintage pieces and natural accessories. Here are some pointers to help you create the ultimate bohemian interior

1. Mixing and layering are key

Combinations are at the heart of the bohemian style. Don’t be afraid to mix and match finishes and textiles. Think of a modern sofa with a bright, handwoven Moroccan blanket thrown across it. Even just adding in a hint of Africa with woven baskets placed on a brightly coloured sideboard will set the tone. Layering patterns is a cost-effective way of making your home feel bohemian, so don’t forget smaller accessories like our stunning elephant waste paper bin

2. Think rich when it comes to colour and patterns

Bold patterns and colours are essential in creating a bohemian vibe. If you are stuck for colour ideas, jewel tones are a good choice - these include amethyst, ruby and emerald. Try putting together a mood board of ideas so you can see which colours and fabrics work well together. Rooms with dark walls often feel luxurious, but by adding some brightly coloured accessories, you will start to build a bohemian style.

3. Accessorise with trinkets that tell stories

Bohemian design is all about the history behind your accessories, and telling a story. Trinket boxes are a great way of reminding you of special trips you have had, or places you have visited. Don’t try and match these special accessories either, different colours and materials are better. Every item in the room should have some special meaning behind it, so take your time to accessorise your home with things that are meaningful to you and your family.

4. Bring the outdoors in

Botanicals are essential to create a bohemian feel. A key part of this trend is to bring the outdoors inside, from all corners of the globe, and plants are a great way to do this. The presence of greenery also helps to lift the atmosphere within your home. Any type of plants are fine for a bohemian-style interior. Try to include plants of different sizes and heights to create more layers and textures.

5. Embellish to your heart’s content

When you are searching for bohemian accessories to decorate your home with, think beads, tassels, fringes and sequins. Bright colours and sparkly items should be your go-to. Think about creating that wow factor when your friends walk into your home. Patterned wallpaper and floral accessories like this stunning vintage floral tissue box cover are great ways of subtly introducing this style. Woven furniture such as the peacock chair are great statement pieces too.
